Brigantine (another name: schoonerbrig) is a term for a type of ship or sailing ship that first appeared in European waters probably in the 16th century and remained in service until the 19th century. It is difficult to clearly indicate the place where this type of unit was created. It is often assumed that the first brigantines were created in the Mediterranean at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries (possibly earlier), but their further development took place in the countries of Western and Northern Europe. Initially, the brigantines had a sail and rowing drive, but the latter was quickly abandoned. Vessels of this type were also characterized by two masts, most often with square sails on the front mast and oblique sails on the rear mast. Units of this type were characterized by very high maneuverability and maximum speed. It was often used by pirates, corsairs or buccaneers, but also as ships covering ports and coasts - especially in the 17th and 18th centuries.
