This symbol of 3 nested squares can represent varying degrees or 'zones of holiness' as one passes from one sacred area to another more sacred area, going to the most sacred center area, or 'Holy of Holies'. (Ezekial 44:23, 1 Chronicles 23:13, Ezekiel 44:23;2 Cor. 6:16-172, Corinthians 6:16-17) Mormons believe in 'the three degrees of glory', the Telestial, Terrestrial, and Celestial. Most LDS temples reflect this graduation in the architectural design. This graphic is seen in the Kirtland, Ohio Temple and modern LDS temples, especially in general temple layout. The number 3 is associated with things divine. B. Zones of Holiness: (Above) Most temples, ancient or modern, normally utilize 3 physical areas or 'zones' of holiness, going from outer less holy areas, to inner more sacred space. These typically include an outer court, and inner court, and a most holy central area, (the Holy of Holies). This physical gradated movement, normally up to higher areas and to spheres or rooms ever more holy may symbolize the gradual transition of life for each of us, as we strive for perfection through gradual steps of life experience. Only those prepared and 'invited' are allowed to enter the most sacred precincts of any holy area. Others are required to remain in outer 'profane' space.
