Description: Yo-Yo Ma | Obrigado Brazil | CD | NEW + Sealed | Yo Yo Ma There have been notable performers who have attempted to give the impression of catholicity and stylistic versatility by recording music with which they are not usually associated. Their specialised colleagues conceal the fact that the ‘star of the show’ simply plays in his/her usual fashion. Yo-Yo Ma has already shown that he is not one of these, and he does so again here. Of his colleagues only the admirable Kathryn Stott lacks South American blood but this music has entered her bloodstream by osmosis.Brazilian music reflects the melting pot of its ethnicity, with the influences of European (not least Portugese) and African music, American jazz and popular music well to the fore. The intimately breathy voice of Rosa Passos exudes the essence of bossa nova – The Girl from Ipanema is in fact a real person, now a married mother. Villa-Lobos’s contributions to the programme represent a different, more classical side of Brazilian music. He was, too, a cellist, though not of Ma’s stature. One of the composers, Egberto Gismonti, appears as Ma’s duo partner, playing piano and, in the ‘bonus track’, flute and guitar – all with notable skill.A famous Argentine musician once hailed someone: ‘You are not a South American but in your heart you are’. He might well have said it to Yo-Yo Ma, who is not imposed on his colleagues; he belongs in their company for the duration of this attractive programme, one that should have a very wide appeal. The performances, recording quality and annotation are of the highest quality. Listen and enjoy! (Gramophone)
