Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) YARMOUTH, ISLE OF WIGHT PASSENGER traffic for the western part of the Isle comes mostly through Yarmouth, this clean and antique little town being the only seaport on this coast. It is reached from London in little more than three hours, via Lymington, though the journey, if ever the proposed Solent tunnel comes into being, will be rendered still shorter, and this delightful corner of the Wight even more easy of access. By means of the railway and a service of omnibuses Yarmouth is in close connection with Freshwater and the western part of the island, Cowes and Newport are within easy reach, and there is a service of steamboats to Lymington and Totland and Alum Bays. A portion of the Castle, erected by Henry VIII., still stands on the eastern side of the harbour, and is at present leased by the proprietors of the Pier Hotel, from whose lawn it is entered. Above the old gateway are sculptured the arms of England and France. The Pier Hotel itself is the ancient residence of the Governors of the Isle. There have recently been extensive alterations and additions to the building, but the fine old oak staircase and the panelling have been spared. In one of the rooms a tablet records a visit paid by Charles II. to the Governor of the Isle, Sir Robert Holmes, in 1671. Yarmouth Harbour, shown in the view, stands in need of dredging and deepening, but at present affords good shelter for small yachts, which make use of it during the season. The third week in August sees the important yearly event, the regatta, both of the club and the town. On the farther side of the pier the pretty club-house of the Solent Yacht Club, standing in its own grounds, commands the beautiful prospect of the Solent, from Hurst Castle to Calshot Castle.
