Background: General Omar Bradley received the command in 1943. 1st Army was formed in January 1944 in Bristol, England in anticipation of Operation Overlord followed by Operation Neptune, the Invasion of Normandy. Operation Cobra finally broke the German lines in France with 3rd Army trapping the Germans in the Falaise Pocket, with 1st Army following up. First Army took Paris, and fought on to liberate Luxembourg. During the Battle of the Bulge they were north of the German Offensive. In March of 1945 by pure luck a small advanced unit seized the Remagen across the Rhine, then 1st Army reduced the Ruhr Pocket. April 18th the 1st reached the Elbe River and was halted. They met up with Russian forces a few days later. The 1st was returned to New York to begin training for the second phase of the Invasion of Japan in the spring of 1946. The atomic bombed ended 1st Army's war.
