Description: WWI Belgian Post-War Coffin Exhumations - Two Real Photographic Postcards By F. Mat An interesting pair of unused real photographic postcards showing the open coffins of German soldiers which had been exhumed after the end of The First World War. Both are by the photographer F. Mat of Forest (in the Brussels-Capital Region) and are captioned on the reverse in French, Dutch and English. They comprise: Eight men stand by an open coffin with a corpse inside. Titled to reverse “The German officer shot at the Brussels North Station as he delivered false passe ports to the Belgians wishing to join through Holland. He ware the Belgian colors in his button hole. That little patriotic souvenir was taken by Dr. Vandenven of Schaerbeek and carefully conserved” A view of an open coffin with a corpse seemingly in a greater state of decay to the one above. Titled to the reverse “Rammler, a German soldier shot for refusing to fire on Miss Edith Cavell” By all accounts, these are from a series of eight postcards produced by F. Mat which were titled “National Shooting Gallery (Belgium) Souvenir of the Civilian Martyrs of the Great War 1914-18”. There has been much recent discussion as to who the bodies depicted are, certainly in the case of the soldier who refused to execute Nurse Cavell, as there is little historical evidence that any soldier refused to fire. Approx. 140x90mm., and both in very fine condition.
