Description: Original WW2 map of the GERMAN COAST which came to me a few months ago with a number of Top Secret "Defences" map of Normandy which had been produced for the D-Day Landings. This particular map was the only one with any identifying clues as to the possible identity of their original owner, with a signature in the bottom margin which reads 'D.S. Fleming'. A quick internet search turned up reference to a 'D.S. Fleming' of No.6 Commando who appears to have come from (or lived in) Scotland, which is where the maps were also sourced. As No. 6 Commando landed on Sword Beach, and the D-Day maps included this stretch of the Normandy Coast, there's a strong argument to be made for a connection. Furthermore, this map of the German coast, entitled "HEILIGENHAFEN", has a number of operational markings including one for "CDO HQ" (COMMANDO HEADQUARTERS), and a series of hand-added routes from remote spots on the coastline heading inland to convergence points before travelling South as one. The routes cut across open country with barely any correlation with the established road network. I've not yet consulted the War Diaries for specific No.6 Commando activity matching the markings, but it does seem that immediately following the German Surrender, 46 Royal Marine Commando were definitely stationed on the large island of 'FEHMARN' featured just off the coast. Therefore, other units may also have been active there, and the markings could relate to training rather than hostilities. Either way, it's an intriguing sheet which could provide plenty of scope for additional research into the War Diaries of various Commando outfits. Printed in October 1944. In decent 'service used' condition, with a small hole and some discolouration along the folds. Please see my other WW2 (and WW1) maps, documents, photos etc. (Seller's Ref - GWA0224)
