WW2 Kriegsmarine Flag White Ensign German submarine U-541 U-boat HMS Venomous

Description: Original WW2 German Kriegsmarine, of the Royal Navy White Ensign Flag. MEGA MEGA RARE ITEM And yes, it's German, read on.It was bought at auction from the estate of the author Lieutenant Commander Robert J Moore RNVR, who lived in Loughborough and served in Normandy Campaign and went on to be Commanding Officer Lt. Cdr. R. J. Moore of HMS Venomous. He was part of the crew that oversaw the The surrender of the German U-Boats - The Battle of the Atlantic was effectively won by May 1943 but the U-Boats fought on and it was not until the war ended in May 1945 that they surrendered. HMS Venomous was one of eight destroyers in the Rosyth Escort Force sent to the entry ports on the west coast of Norway to accept the surrender of German naval forces, Operation Conan. Venomous (Lt Cdr A.G. Prideaux RNVR) and Valorous (Lt Cdr J.A.J. Dennis DSC RN) were sent to Kristiansand and their COs describe the surrender ceremonies held there on this website and in A Hard Fought Ship. Eighty six of the 135 captured u-boats were laid up at Loch Ryan in Scotland and thirty two at Lisahally where the River Foyle joined Lough Foyle, the future site of Foyle Port, Londonderry. By agreement between the allies eight were allocated to the UK, one to the USA and ten to the USSR and the remaining 116 u-boats were sink in 100 metre of water north west of Ireland as described by Derek Waller in his detailed study of Operation Deadlight,(See photo of one of the other auction lots from Lieutenant Commander Moore) The late Lieutenant Commander Moore is the author of A Hard Fought Ship: The Story of HMS Venomous and served on board the ship in World War II. He also co-wrote A Fortunate Ship A Most on a Narrow Sea - Dodging mines and aerial attacks, a Royal Navy destroyer played a vital role in evacuating troops across the English Channel early in World War II. By Captain John A. Rodgaard, U.S. Navy, and Lieutenant Commander Robert J. Moore, Royal Naval ReserveSee below for biography and photos for image of himAlong with this flag was a German Battle Ensign marked with "Battle Ensign for U-Boat 541 Cuxhaven V.E." the same as one shown in B&W photos. This is marked in German with "KRIEGS FLG ENGLAND" meaning War Flag England. The flag's dimensions are marked in metric 200cm x 100cm not imperial.I give a MONEY BACK GUARANTEE THIS FLAG IS 100% ORIGINAL This would have been used to make the vessel look like a British submarine if attacked, or if the vessel was to surrender. The German submarine would be flying the White Ensign above the German Ensign. Apparently the relative position of the two flags is important, as it indicates surrender on the part of the lower flag. She was reassigned to the 10th flotilla for operations on 1 November, then the 33rd flotilla on 1 November 1944. See image of U-541 entering Gibraltar Harbor to surrender, May 1945.She carried out four patrols and sank one ship. She was a member of four wolfpacks.SEE BOTTOM OF THIS FOR LOADS OF DETAILS ABOUT CAPTURE, WHICH RELATES TO Imperial War Museum photo of her in Gibraltar. Made from Hessian Cotton, with re-enforced trailing edge and corners. HistoryHMS Venomous also conducted missions in World War II, including harrowing running duel with a U-boat in the Mediterranean while rescuing the crew of HMS Hecla in November of 1942. HMS Venomous, one of sixty-seven V&W destroyers built at the end of the Great War that were to play a key role in the struggle to keep the sea lanes open in the Atlantic, Home Waters and the Mediterranean during the following war. Her story was perhaps the most memorable of all her class. When war broke out she was to find herself in the front line as the German blitzkrieg swept across Europe in 1940 and the V&Ws made high speed dashes across the Channel to bring troops and civilians back from Calais, Boulogne and Dunkirk, and prepared for the expected invasion. Later that year she and her sister-ships escorted the Atlantic convoys which supplied our Russian allies with the weapons to halt the German advance. She returned to the Mediterranean and took part in Operation Pedestal to save Malta, and as the allies prepared for the landings in North Africa she was ordered to escort the destroyer depot ship, HMS Hecla to the invasion beaches. When Hecla was torpedoed off the coast off Morocco Venomous fought the attacking U-boat and rescued 500 survivors. She escorted convoys along the coast of North Africa including the first-through convoy from Gibraltar to Alexandria. and she joined the invasion force to Sicily during Operation Husky. In October 1943 she returned to Britain for a major refit at Falmouth when she was converted to an air target ship for training Barracuda torpedo bombers based at Douglas, Isle of Man, and then, after being transferred to the east coast, she was nearly lost in a hurricane before being sent to Kristiansand to accept the surrender of German naval forces. Venomous and her sister-ships were all scrapped after the War, but her extraordinary career, during which she fought without cessation, is brought to life in this rousing and beautifully told ship biography, a fitting memorial to the V&Ws and the men who served in them. 'I would rate this as being in the same class as The Cruel Sea for a picture of small ship life in World War Two.' The Naval Review 'A portrayal of life on a wartime destroyer with a depth and insight that is possible unequalled by any previously published work.' Warship Annual This book is outstanding for its detailed insight into the life on not just a single destroyer but, by extension, life at sea aboard and Royal Navy destroyer.' The Northern Mariner 'A Hard Fought Ship is a vivid portrait of a fighting vessel and the men who operated her.' Warships International Fleet Review 'Highly recommended to both naval historians and the general public.' Mariner's Mirror 'It is an exemplary ship biography where a detailed narrative of the destroyer's exploits are brought to life by a wealth of first-hand accounts.' Navy News This book is a detailed and thrilling account of the life of a typical V&W class destroyer.' The Man Robert J Moore (1943-2007) Bob Moore, the authorBob Moore was born in Loughborough in 1943 and lived there all his life. His father, Jack Moore, commanded a minesweeper, the St Barbe during the war. Bob went to Loughborough grammar school and left aged seventeen to work at a local firm of estate agents, W & F Armstrong (today called Mather Jamie) and qualified as a surveyor. In 1971 he married his wife Pat Raynor. Bob played hockey for Leicestershire and reported on matches for local papers, and also played rugby and cricket. He was a keen bird watcher, gardener and allotment holder but he felt there was something missing from his life after he retired from hockey and cricket and perhaps influenced by his father’s wartime service in small boats offered his services to Loughborough’s Sea Cadet Unit, TS Venomous, in 1985. This led to a passionate interest in the history of the elderly V & W Class destroyer after which the Sea Cadet Corp unit was named. He went to immense lengths to track down the surviving officers and crew of HMS Venomous and his interviews with them formed the basis of the first edition of this book when it was self published in 1990. In 1990 Bob became Officer in Charge in charge of TS Venomous and after promotion to Lieutenant he was confirmed as Commanding Officer in 1992. The normal period of service for a CO of a Sea Cadet Unit is five years but by the time Lt Cdr (SCC) R.J. Moore stood down in 2003 he had served for thirteen years. Bob became Assistant District Officer for Northants and Leicestershire Sea Cadets and remained in that post until his death at the tragically early age of 63 on the 24 February 2007. He died six months after retirement from Mather Jamie and eighteen months after the death of his father, aged 93. His good friend, Captain John A Rodgaard USN (Ret), took over as lead author and Capt John Kingwell RN, a former staff member of TS Venomous, wrote the Foreword SUBJECT: INTERROGATION OF SURVIVORS FROM "U.541", "U.485" and "U.963".
