Description: A very rare original example of a British WW-II Home Front MK-II Brodie Steel Helmet issued to a Female Driver with American Ambulance Great Britain A humanitarian organisation based in Londonduring the Battle of Britain in 1940,American Ambulance Great Britain was created by a small group ofneutral Americans living in London as war spread across Europe. Eventually operating from 17 stations across the countryand funded by Americans living in Britain & back home in the States,AAGBsupplied ambulances to the British Home Frontthat were driven by British women volunteersaged between 18 & 45, plus a number of girls recruited fromThe Women's Mechanised Transport Corps (WMTC)andThe First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY) With medical & driver training primarily taking place in Leeds, the AAGB crews wore FANY uniforms with crossed American/UK flags on their sleeves and they drove grey-painted American converted Chevrolets & Packardcars that also exhibited crossed American/UK flags. As a vital back-up to the UK ambulances in service duringThe Blitz AAGB's main role was to react to Luftwaffe air-raids on London, and the UK's other main cities in which they were based, to transportthe resulting civilian casualties to hospital . In a good issued & used conditionthough with a veneer of all-over rust, the lettersA.A.G.B were hand-painted in white within a blue panel to the frontover a factory-finished battleship grey paint jobboth inside and out. Still with its original liner with black shoe-lace & elasticated chinstrap, this helmet shell is clearly marked on the underside of the rimBMB 7 1940 (Briggs Motor Bodies Ltd of Dagenham 1939-1945)whilst the small-sized rexine liner is also stampedBMBI19406 3/4With less than 400 young women recruited intoAmerican Ambulance Great Britainthis surviving,well-used Brodie has to be considered amongst the rarest ofBritish Home Front Brodie steel helmets from World War Two.
