Description: German Army Small Bill of Louvain Belgium WWI Stationary 1919 Letter. - - - DESCRIPTION & CONDITION: During the first years of their occupation of Belgium, the German authorities printed a variety of posters with instructions or warnings for the local civilian population, and many of these were collected and reproduced by British authorities as anti-German propaganda during and after the War. This piece of stationary features a handbill printed for the citizens of Louvain during the early months of the war regarding keeping houses from being burnt down, and was printed by the Soldats Invalides Belges, a charity war-hospital. That organization produced notebooks of blank letter-writing paper with illustrations of scenes from the Western Front, and examples of German proclamation cards such as this one. The writing on our letter is dated January 10, 1919, comprises several quoted passages, followed by the partial sentence- “Dear folks, On duty again this evening and I’ve begun my-” at which point the letter writer runs out of room and switched to a second sheet, now unfortunately lost.Single sheet. 5.5”x9”. Folds, some soil and wear, edge stain, slight edge chip.
