Description: WW1 Casualty British Victory Medal to O'Donnell, KIA on HMS Ariel (a Destroyer) Impressed to : J.13900 R.L. O’DONNELL. L.TEL. R.N. (Richard Laurence, born Southampton, Hants. on 13 April 1896). He enlisted in 1911, joining HMS Ariel (an Acheron class Destroyer) on 12th May 1917 and was KIA 02/08/1918 when HMS Ariel struck a mine on 2 August, whilst conducting minelaying in the western end of the Heligoland Bight, the V-class destroyer Vehement sank after striking a German mine. In attempting to exit the minefield, Ariel lost her bow and sank in less than an hour. (49 lives) were lost, including her commanding officer, Lieutenant Frank A. Rothera. Richard is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, with service sheet and CWGC. Near EF Condition.
