Description: Original WW1 ROMANIAN map entitled "UNGVAR" which was once part of the private collection of ALAN GRANT OGILVIE (see italics below for further details). As WW1 began, the area covered by this map was under the control of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. (Having changed hands several times in the last century, the city of UNGVAR now forms part of UKRAINE and is known as UZHHOROD.) The map's survey details were clearly 'borrowed' from pre-existing Austro-Hungarian surveys, but its subsequent production can be identified as Romanian by the use of the word 'Scara' for the scale. At the time this map was printed in 1914, Romania had assumed a neutral stance. The country finally entered the War in 1916 before changing allegiances several times. It's one of several similar maps which I'm listing from this period that belonged to OGILVIE, whose personal ink stamp is in the top right margin. Professor ALAN GRANT OGILVIE was an eminent geographer whose service with the Royal Field Artillery in WW1 led him to transfer to the Royal Engineers for the purpose of mapping the Dardanelles and the Macedonian Front etc. His military service in Salonika, France and the Dardanelles saw him mentioned in dispatches, and in 1919 he attended the Paris Peace Conference representing the British delegation in respect to international boundary settlements. It's clear that during his official work he had unlimited access to a huge range of Allied and enemy maps. Following WW1 he resumed his academic career, rising to head Edinburgh University's Geography Department, still finding time to become a Captain in the Home Guard during WW2. This map comes from a large collection recently sold off by Edinburgh University - hence their own ink stamping to margin. It's in excellent condition for its age and will be shipped in a stout cardboard tube. Please see my other WW2 (and WW1) maps, documents, photos etc. Seller's Ref - U1234
