Bord.R.) mounted court style for display, with separate flattened medal box lid, nearly extremely fine (3) Born in Warrington on 15th December 1895, Private William Habberley worked as a plumber & gas fitter in Liverpool. Private Habberley enlisted for army service on 4th February 1913, declaring his age to be 19 years when he was actually only aged 17. He was serving as a Rifleman with 1st Battalion, Border Regiment in Maymyo, Burma at the outbreak of war. After returning to England he entered the Balkan theatre with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, landing at Cape Helles on 25th April 1915 (first day of the Gallipoli Campaign). He suffered a ‘severe’ gunshot wound to the abdomen in action around Suvla on 25th August 1915. Receiving treatment in Alexandria and following a period of convalescence in England, he returned to active service with 2nd Battalion on the Western Front in May 1916. On 1st July (the first day of the Battle of the Somme) he was wounded for a second time, suffering a gunshot wound to his left arm during the capture of Mametz. He returned to France in October 1917, moving with the battalion to Italy a month later. Here, he transferred to 24th (Pioneers) Battalion, Manchester Regiment (61613) on 26th August 1918; subsequently serving in Egypt following the armistice, and was discharged to Section B Army Reserve upon demobilisation in April 1920. He returned home to Liverpool and married in 1925. He died in August 1974, aged 78. Please see images as illustration of condition. Sold with copied MIC, rolls, and research.
