BARRY - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 01/02/1834 - HFSID 17134 WILLIAM T. BARRY Letter on family matters written by the US Postmaster General Autograph Letter signed: "W. T. Barry", 1 page, 7x9½. Washington, D.C., 1934 January 2. To Major James Taylor, New Port, Kentucky. In full: "I rejoice at the contents of your letter of the 22nd announcing the birth of a son. We had great solicitation about this event, one that always grows out of such trying and interesting occasions, greatly increased by the recollections of Susan's recent & delicate health. Present my love to her & Mary & Lucy; and hug the dear little boy for us. Your father is here and looks very well. Albert Harrison & S. T. Mason of Detroit dine with me on a saddle of Venison that he got & brought with him from the Mountains. Mr. Barry & Jackson are still in Va.; & it is uncertain now when they may return, as the winter is soft & the roads very bad. I refer you to the newspapers for what is going on in Washington. Your friend & obdt. Svt." William T. Barry (1784-1835) held several State offices in Kentucky, including Secretary of State and Lieutenant Governor, and was an unsuccessful candidate for Governor. He represented Kentucky in the US House (1810-1811) and Senate (1814-1816), and was US Postmaster General under President Jackson (1829-1835). He was appointed US Minister to Spain in 1835, but died en route to his post. This letter was written to the son and namesake of General James Taylor, quartermaster general of the Northwest Army during the War of 1812 and a founder of Newport, Kentucky. The elder Taylor, mentioned by Barry as being in Washington, was the cousin of two US Presidents: James Madison and Zachary Taylor. Toned and lightly soiled. Creased with multiple notches at edges and center. Multiple mailing folds. Torn at folds. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Corners creased and chipped.
