Description: A History of Georgia from its First Discovery by Europeans 2 Volumes To the Adoption of the Present Constitution in MDCCXCVIII. First edition, 2 volumes 1847-1859. William Bacon Stevens. New York: D. Appleton & Company, 1847-1859. First edition, 2 vols, 8vo (9" x 5 3/4"), pp. xiii, (3), (1), 2-503, (1), 5 engraved plates & maps including one folding view of St. Augustine; xvi, (17), 18-524, engraved frontispiece portrait, folding color map. Howes s-974 lists 4 plates & a map & notes "fewer in some copies". This pair has 6 plates and the folding map. Stevens preface mentions the 11 years delay in his finishing volume 2 and says some copies of volume one were "held back". That there are discrepancies in the plates is therefore, perhaps not surprising. Original publisher's gilt decorated & lettered dark brown cloth. Very good with some wear to cloth at gutters & extremities. Sheets & plates mostly quite clean with very moderate age toning, fold map is fine, but one text section & the fold out view with some age browning, unmarked, complete.
