Description: Watercolor Rio de Janeiro Praia Icarai Niteroi Brazil by Otto Bungner Listed Art Original Signed and Titled Watercolor of Rio de Janeiro Praia Icarai Niteroi Brazil by Otto Bungner Listed Artist, circa 1920-1940 This GORGEOUS original vintage (1920-1930) Brazilian watercolor by Otto Bungner (also known as Otto Bughner) depicts a beautiful view from Iteroi Beach, Rio de Janeiro, Niteroi looking out to the view of the Sugarloaf Mountain and the Rio de Janeiro skyline with its surrounding lush mountains in the background We can see the ships and boats share the nearby ocean while a fisherman tends to his fishing nets on the beach. This painting was most likely created in the early 20th century- likely some time around 1920-1930, as this painting was together with another that was dated to pre-1930 (but his artist was active in 1914-1940). It is painted on artist board, and is signed and titled at the lower right corner. "Otto Bungner / Rio de Janeiro/ Praia Jcarahy". Otto Bungner (1890-1965)(Brazil). The Dicionário brasileiro de artistas Plásticos (INL/MEC, v. 1, 1973), organized by Carlos Cavalcanti, records the artist's name in a different spelling, Otto Bughner, Brazil, He participated in the Salão Nacional de Belas Artes, in Rio de Janeiro, having won a silver medal in 1915 and a first-degree honorable mention in 1918. He is included in 1916 book, a Century of Brazilian painting (Um Seculo da pintura by Laudelino Freire) In 1923, he was part of the Brazil Centennial exhibition, Also in Rio, in 1940, he participated in the Flamboyant exhibition, promoted by the Sociedade Brasileira de Belas Artes. I found him mentioned in books after 1950, but more about his work being in certain Brazilian public collections, and not about him actively participating in exhibitions, which makes me think that he was not actively painting after 1940.
