The original CD with OCR (optical character recognition) software is not included because it is not compatible with current systems; however, rest assured that this unit was fully tested and is fully functional, and you can use your own OCR software that you are free to download from a reliable source. The scanning resolution is 300 DPI on low setting and 600 DPI on high setting. To use, simply push the scan button for 2 seconds to turn it on, press the DPI button to switch unit to high resolution, position the scanner at the top of what you want to scan, ensuring that the picture you're scanning is between the two arrows marked on each side of the scanner, then press and release the scan button and slowly and steadily slide the scanner on the surface to be scanned, and finally press the scan button again when done. The scanned image number in the LCD window will increment by 1 upon every successful scan. The scanning area can be up to 8.27" wide by up to 50" long, so you can even scan a scarf to capture that perfect knitting pattern!
