Description: Vtg Dona Rosa Turtle w/ lid Black Pottery Oaxaca Mexico 10" Aprx Signed. Beautiful Turtle with removable shell, revealing a tricket box. Approx 10" from tail to nose. Marked on the base. Polished and matte finish, specific to Dona Rosa's pottery work. Dona Rosa Real Mateo de Nieto, was a Mexico ceramics artisan from San Bartolo Oaxaca Mexico. In 1950 she invented the technique of Barro Negro ceramic type: black and shiny after firing. Just before the clay piece is completely dry, it is polished with quartz stone, to compress the surface. It is then fired at a slightly lower temperature than traditional pieces. After firing, the piece emerges a shiny black instead of a dull gray. Some minor scratches, but a great decor piece!
