Description: Presented for sale is a Vintage Dixon, Illinois Petunia Festival Button Pin. Dixon, Illinois / Petunia Festival: Dixon, Illinois is nestled along the scenic Rock River in Lee County. It is best known as the boyhood home of President Ronald Reagan. Petunias all started in the late 1950s, when dutch elm disease, along with highway expansion, wiped out the trees along Galena Avenue, the main road through town. So, a local men's garden group decided to start planting some petunias on the side of the road, and that grew. After a few years, some local people said, 'let's start afestival in honor of the petunias,' and that started in 1965. It is known to attract upwards of 50,000 people. Held annually around July 4th, this long-running annual event includes a carnival, live music, car show, Ronald Reagan 5K walk/run, art show, beer garden, food, parade, and fireworks.
