Description: Vintage UNUSUAL Axe head by W Gilpin - Weight 2.25 Kg (5 Lb) As heading - This is a mystery axe to me - Not 100% sure what type of pattern this is - I have seen many 100's of axes but never seen one like this. It could be a felling axe or a broad axe I really do not know - when I originally bought this some time ago I thought it was just a common(but large) Kent pattern - but is is not. Weight is 2.25 Kg (5Lb)Width of head 8 1/4"Length of edge 6"Size iof eye -2 1/2" X 7/8"Marked lightly "W Gilpin" The poll of the axe head looks like it has been fire welded in place - there is a mark on the bottom of the poll but I cannot make it out - see pictures. If anyone on here can enlighten me on this type of axe(name of the pattern/shape) I would be very grateful. I have been told that from the shape and design the axehead would probably date to between the years 1830 - 1860. The surface of the axe head has some minor patches of pit-marking, some heavy tarnish and signs of use.The top lugs have been slightly peened this could be improved by some careful restoration work. This has NOT been buffed and polished within an inch of it's life - the new owner can decide how much they would like it "improved". There are NO cracks in the metal and there are NO chips from the edge. This would make a great addition to a collection of vintage axes or rural tools.
