Description: Offered for your consideration is a SHEAFFER’S Balance pencil in the small or demi size, manufactured in the USA c.1933. This attractive pencil was made of early cellulose plastic in the green and black camo pattern that SHEAFFER called “Marine green” with a gold-plated trim band and lead cone, plus a ring top for attaching to a long chain or lanyard. Ring top pencils like this were favored by librarians and others that needed to have something to write with “at the ready.” The ring may be a replacement.So, please have a look at my large photos and read the remaining description to decide if this SHEAFFER’S Balance-line pencil should become yours. This SHEAFFER’S pencil is in clean, very good condition. It measures 4⅛” long by ⅜” at center thickest. The top and bottom barrel sections are in nice shape with no chips or cracks, just some tiny dings and light scratches from the years. Plus, the gold-filled trim has minimal wear and the halves join securely with the typical small gap. Also, the SHEAFFER’S Made in USA imprint above the barrel band is crisp and fully legible. This old SHEAFFER was made to last by American craftsmen and last it certainly has! Most importantly, the pencil works perfectly and extends the .046” (1.1mm) lead with a turn of the lower barrel section. Lead retraction, when needed, is accomplished by turning barrel in the opposite direction (instead of a manual push of the lead like most). The eraser, however, is missing but a replacement should be easy to source, if needed. Currently, the pencil has a stick of vintage .046” lead that’s quite soft and writes brilliantly.
