Description: Vintage Possibly a Panama Kuna Nuchukana Carving Doll. I believe this to be a Panama Kuna Nuchukana carving. According to the research, "a Panama Kuna Nuchukana carving is a wooden anthropomorphic sculpture crafted by the Kuna indigenous people of Panama, primarily used in their traditional healing practices where the carved figures , called "nuchukana" or simply "nuchu", are believed to represent good spirits that can ward off illnesses and malevolent spirits. These carvings are highly significant in Kuna culture and often feature distinctive facial features like a prominent nose and lack of a mouth. These carvings are highly valued by the Kuna people and often passed down through generations within families." This very traditional figurine or doll came from an estate where the individual had a collection of dolls from around the world. This was part of that collection. The piece measures 9 1/2" tall from the top of his headdress to the tip of his toes, and 7 1/2" from the top of her head to the tip of her toes. She is 2" across her tummy and her headdress measures 5" across from side to side. She is 2" wide. She will need to be mounted on a base to stand or supported by a doll stand or perhaps even her feet could be "fixed" so she could stand all by herself. She has two black round eyes, a metal ring in her nose and has a beaded necklace on. She is made from balsa wood and cloth and quite colorful.
