Description: Our best guess is that this is a PADCO Canvasback Drake Working Decoy made by the Pascagoula Decoy Company of Pascagoula, Mississippi. They began making decoys in the early 1940's and ended production of wooden decoys in 1959. The photos give a good description and show the characteristic paddle shaped tail which was commonly found on their decoys, but not necessarily canvasbacks. This one has the carving around the beak, typical of their Premier Decoys but most of the canvasback decoy photos of their work had a different tail. The coloring on this on is a bit worn on the head but the reddish brown coloring and beak would indicate a canvasback, as does the white body and black rear end. Anyway, here it is and we do not profess to be experts on these decoys. It is near life size measuring 16 inches from beak to tail, 5.25 inches wide, and 7 inches tall. It has lead weights nailed to the underneath and it weighs just over 2 pounds. A number of famous decoy making companies were located in Pascagoula. Many of their decoys resembled each others' products. Typically they were made with a type of lathe that left ridges on the decoy, which this one has. Decoys from that area are fairly common but certain ones like canvasbacks were less common. We listed this one in hopes someone might be looking for an addition to their collection. We can ship it within the U.S. quire reasonably and invite your inspection and offer.
