The type of soap dish I'm used to seeing is the aluminum one that is either bright metal or spray painted O.D. Green. However, with the heavy demand on metal as the war progressed, substitute materials such as plastic, bake-Lite, and lucite resin were all in use. This is a nice example of what I believe, may be of the Lucite-resin variety. I honestly have not seen one in my 40 years of collecting....so this is only a guess. A nice item at any rate. I'm putting this on watch while I do a little more researchThese were not 100% military issue. When I was a kid back in the 50s-60s we had several with different designs where the compass rose is. I particularly remember a white plastic and a blue/turquoise colored one. They lasted well into the 80s, which is why I remember them so well. May have been purchased from a public supplier for military use.
