The third part devoted to geography was to include an ancient geography which was never produced, a reissue of Ptolemy's Geographia (published in 1578 and 1584) and a modern geography which would constitute the Atlas. The first edition of the Atlas appeared in 1585 with maps of France, Switzerland, the Spanish Netherlands and Germany. Italiae, Sclavoniae and Graeciae tabule geographice were added for the second edition of 1589.After Mercator's death in 1594, the Atlas continued to be published by his son Rumold and the collaboration of Mercator's three grandsons. The new edition of 1595 will include the maps of Orbis terrae and Europa by Rumold, Africa and Asia by Gérard junior and America by Michel. In 1604, the Mercator family sold the copper plates of the Atlas to the cartographer and publisher Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612) who devoted the rest of his professional life to this business.
