Hubley Brief History: Hubley Manufacturing was founded by John E. Hubley in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1894. For the first 15 years or so, the company made model trains, but they encountered the obstacle of not being able to compete with the new advancements in electric model trains with tracks of the era. So, Hubley decided to sell their entire inventory of trains and shifted their focus to cast iron toys, mechanical banks, doorstops and bookends. The early Hubley cast iron productions had a wide arrange of themes from cats and dogs to fire trucks and farm tractors and implements. It wasn't long before automobiles, airplanes, motorcycles and the like became the foundation of Hubley's toy production line. During the 1930's, the company made the decision to compete with Dowst "TootsieToy", and Hubley introduced a new line of diecast zinc alloy toys, which they named "Kiddie Toy." By the year 1942, the company had dedicated all production to the war efford. After the was ended in 1945, Hubley did not return to producing cast iron toys as before. They instead focused on diecast productions and even experimented with a composite material they called "Huboid". In 1949 the company began producing plastic toys and added them to their Kiddie Toy line. It is not uncommon to find some toys that are nearly identical aside from the plastic and metal differences. During the 1960's Hubley began experiencing financial difficulties. Gabriel Industries purchased the company sometime around 1965-1969. From the time of the 1920's up until the point that Gabriel bought the company, Hubley's toys had a strong resemblance to their real-world counterparts, and sometimes the toys actully bore the actual company names and logos. The vehicles produced after the Gabriel acquisition were definitely more generic in styling and for most Hubley collectors, it represents a turning point. IMPORTANT: This toy is old.
