Fuzesi was born in Budapest in 1931 and emigrated to the United States where he died in 2008. He was a contemporary of the well-known Hungarian artist and fellow emigre Pal Fried, who incidentally may have influenced the younger artist in both style and genre judging by the similarities seen in their works and techniques. The painting is signed FUZESI L at lower right. The back of the hand carved frame has a few areas that have been written on with several notes, including one misattributing the artist as being Spanish. The back of the frame is also stamped HECHO EN MEXICO. We are unsure when Fuzesi executed the painting but believe it likely dates to the 1950s or 1960s. The painting exhibits aging, discoloration, fading, scratches, scuffs, nicks, dirty and/or stained areas, general wear, and missing paint in several areas throughout (see pictures). There is also a light faded horizontal line running the width of the canvas about one third of the way down from the top. The frame also shows wear including aging, chips, dings, discoloration, scratches, nicks, dirty and/or stained areas, and a large splintered/cracked piece along the back bottom edge. Despite these flaws the painting still displays very nicely and would be all the more striking with some cleaning and light restoration. The visible part of the image measures roughly 23 1/2” x 19 1/2” and the canvas in whole measures roughly 24” x 20”. The frame measures 30 1/2” x 26 1/2” x 1 1/4” overall and weighs roughly 5 lbs 6 oz.
