THIS ITEM IS----one of so many great books i have on ebay right now, check them all out if you wish, pictures show condition, ebays zoom in feature is great to really see what you are considering:--------Published by John C. Winston,, Philadelphia, 1933. Octavo, 115 photographs and 16 wood engravings in text. The experiences of Gifford "Giff" Bryce Pinchot and his school chum Stephen "Stiff" Stahlnecker, as they embarked upon a cruise across the Pacific in the Mary Pinchot, a three-masted schooner bought and outfitted by Giff's father in 1929. Adopting a Tom Sawyer-esque tone, Giff leads us through all the intricacies of the journey from preparation at the Brooklyn Naval Base to completion in the Society Islands: from being placed in charge of the ship's armoury (at the age of thirteen) to chagrin at discovering the cook's ill-considered decision to dispense with a crate of codfish balls by throwing them overboard to make room for more canned goods. The journey was intended to make many scientific discoveries and to this end engaged the services of a scientist - the redoubtable Professor Pilsbry whose shell-collecting unearthed 23 new species and an entirely new genus of shelled creatures - and a photographer armed with eight miles of film and an extravagant underwater camera. Cover has light wear, endpapers are of very nice maps. Small crease on lower corner of one page, a little light scuff mark on pg 4 and very small stain on pg 5. Tiny bit of creasing (looks like it came from publisher that way), pencil inscription inside cover. Light fading on spine. 241 pgs. VIEW MY OTHER AUCTION ITEMS TERMS AND CONDITIONS 1.
