Will ship flat. Albert Ruben (1918-2011)ROCKPORT -- Albert (Al) Ruben, noted artist, passed away on Sunday, March 13, 2011 in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.Al was born on Dec. 4, 1918 in New Orleans. He received his BA in Arts with honors at UCLA in 1941. He studied at the Art Students' League of New York from 1943 to 1947. He also studied in France and Florence, Italy. In 1956, he married the love of his life, Mille (Licata). They moved to Rockport in 1968 and would later spend their winters in San Miguel. Besides his love for Millie and the arts, Al was an avid Patriots and Red Sox fan.Over the years Al has been the recipient of many awards for his art work. They include: Award of Merit, International Art Exhibition, Florida; Memorial Gold Medal, American Art Society, New York City; David Knapp Memorial Award, American Art Society, New York City; Award of Merit, Ross Gallery National Exhibition, New Jersey; Artist's Prize, Best Painting in Oils (twice), Popular Prize (twice), Gold Medal (twice), Best Portrait (twice), Rockport Art Association; Best New Artist, Johnson Prize and Memorial Prize, North Shore Art Association.In additionto his many awards, his painting Blind Beggar was purchased and became part of a permanent collection in the Montreal Museum. He had numerous one man shows in New York City, New Jersey, Boston and Rockport. He was a member of Allied Artists of America; Copley Society of Artists, Salmagundi Club, New York City; Life Member Arts Students' League of New York City, and a longtime member of the Rockport Art Association.Al leaves behind a group of close friends who carefully watched over him after Millie's passing and, as once written in Arts Publication, "goes his own way... a combination of dash and sincerity." - "
