Description: 1972 Timex Marlin A few years ago when Timex reissued the Marlin, they made it an almost 1:1 reproduction of the classic. Why not? A classic size, a classic form, a classic watch for those who hunger for a classic time. The Timex Marlin is a watch that transcends simplicity in design. This presentation is an actual model 26050 from the 1972 catalog with an upgraded 21 jewel movement. The 35 mm chrome case features a 30 mm light champagne dial with a subtle sunburst motif and stylized black Arabic numerals at all positions. The chrome hour and minute hand are accompanied in their journey through time with a sweep second hand that touches all the numerals. There are no minute indices. The chrome plating on the crown is worn down to the brass. This gives a striking contrast and complements the dial on this unique horologic standout. This vintage piece originally featured Timex’s M24 zero-jewel caliber as its motive force. In the servicing process, the mechanism, although very robust in its original configuration, had become worn and the mainspring no longer capable of sustaining a full days wind. In casting around for alternatives, a new old stock M72 21-jewel movement was procured and installed in the body of this classic. The M72, once properly lubricated with fresh Mobius 9000, the equivalent of the Elgin oil used in the factory, roared to life with a full wind. The 40 mm lug-to-lug length and 10 mm height give it a great fit to all but the tiniest wrists. The 17 mm bracelet is a period-correct replacement stretch band in a matching chrome plate with a subtle left to right upward diagonal pattern. This pattern breaks up the otherwise solid chrome of the case and offers an anti-reflective and fingerprint hiding element to the piece. This watch is marked as water resistant and the gasket has been replaced but, it is recommended that this Marlin only see hand washing and maybe the occasional episode of being caught in the rain and not fighting for its life on the end of a sport fisherman’s line. Will this holdup under a macro lens? Probably not. There is a subtle patina to the hands, face and case that accentuate its authentic vintage heritage. There are scratches on the caseback and one on the crystal at the 9 o’clock position that mark this as a watch that has seen action. At 50 years old, how many of us are unscarred by the forces of life? This Marlin is a catch for the most discriminating Timex collector and someone who appreciates a part of horological history.
