Description: This is a Victorian Era English Writing Box or Slope. It is made of hardwood with veneers of rosewood on the outside. On the top and around the top edging it has a stunning mother of Pearl Floral Inlay. It has a working lock with a replacement key, a crystal inkwell, what appears to be the original velvet writing surface, a mother of pearl key escutcheon and cartouche on the top, and compartments on the inside for pens, stamps and inkwells. With it when we found it is a feather dip pen that has an antique brass connector to allow the feather to be used as a dip pen with metal writing tip inserts. The Box is quite large, measuring 15 x 10 x 5.25 inches. It is 20.5 inches when open and weighs six pounds, eight ounces. It is in wonderful antique condition with a few issues. Be sure to look closely at the mother of Pearl inlays one the top and edging. They are perfect with no broken or missing parts. The velvet writing surface is stained with ink and what appears to be paint. There is minor drying cracking on the top rosewood veneer. There is also some drying cracking, separations on some of the corners. All are visible in the photos. The interior is painted to resemble rosewood but it is not rosewood. Our antiques expert guessed this lovely Box to have been made in the late 1800's, possibly early 1900's. The maker is unknown to us and there are no markings or indications on the box. We love these old writing boxes and ideal of sending a personal hand written message. They make a wonderful gift for a teacher or someone who still values handwritten expression. We can ship it inexpensively within the U.S. and accept returns for any reason.
