Description: When La Provence was launched in 1905 by Chantiers et Ateliers de St. Naziere in 1905 it became the largest ship in the CGT (Campagne General Transatlantique) fleet. It's maiden voyage was April 21, 1906 from Le Havre to New York and traveled that route regularly until June 17, 1914 when French Naval Authorities decided to convert it into a troopship for WW I. This medal was acquired by an ancestor early in the ship's history. Being a state-of-the-art ship, La Provence was soon equipped with the Marconi Wireless radio system. It was one of the first three ships to hear the distress call from the Titanic at 12:15 am on April 15, 1912. There was confusion regarding the correct location transmitted. La Provence assisted with relaying the corrected location at 12:25 am. In December 1914, La Provence was relaunched as an armed merchant cruiser named Provence 11. On February 26, 1916 in the Aegean Sea near Cape Matapan, it was torpedoed and sunk by German Submarine U-15. There were an estimated 1,700 French troops onboard from which there were 870 survivors and 830 lost. La Provence was memorable for it's construction, it's role in the Titanic rescue effort and it's place in World War 1.
