Description: This very early Ward Lock & Co illustrated travel guide is one of the original editions of the "red" guides published between 1901 and 1910. These were the first of those with the famous "coat of arms" design on the cover and with the 1/- net price at the top of the spine, leading to the guides becoming known as the "shilling" guides. They are full of contemporary photographs, advertisements and fold-out maps. These guides are increasingly becoming collectors' items. I have a large collection of these early guides, but am needing to sell a number because of lack of space to store them.This particular guide dates from 1903/04. 3rd edition revised. Details as follows : Area covered : North Wales (northern section), including Chester, Llandudno, the Collins, Rhyl, Conway, Penmaenmawr, Llanfairfechan, Bangor, Bettws-y-Coed, Carnarvon, Snowdon and surrounding parts.Contents : 192 pages of text. 5 maps and 3 plans (all of which are present). 50 illustrations. 90 pages of wonderful old contemporary advertisements. Overall condition : Very good internally, but some external wear. Maps : Very good. All the maps and plans are present and complete. Very little wear. One map has a closed tear in it - no loss. No other markings or damage. Covers : Very good. Normal wear. Slight fading to black design. Faint bumping to edges. No markings or damage. Spine : The spine cloth is complete, but is rather worn faded, with superficial cracking and splitting. Binding : Very good. Just faint crack inside the front and rear covers.Pages : Very good.
