Description: This Set is in very Good Condition, clean Cds no damage and Booklet is also clean This historical opera is based on the unfortunate, but true story of two men of the Foscari family, therefore the name, "The Two Foscaris." It has the most unrelentingly depressing plot I have ever come across. Surely, a prescription for Prozac should accompany every CD set! An innocent man is forced into exile and then prison and then exile again and dies on his way to his second exile. His father, the Doge, is eventually deposed and dies at the time of his son's death. There are no joyful moments in this opera. There is no love affair except that the main protagonist is already happily married. What would be a love duet is more like a commiseration duet. I listened to the opera four times but could not warm up to it, so I listened a fifth time with the libretto in hand. That only helped a little. There are no famous arias in this opera, and except for a decent aria for the tenor, nothing is really worthy of being lifted for solo performance. Often occurring, but especially peculiar to Verdi operas, the words and music do not always seem to belong together. The singer may be singing lines of extreme anger or tragedy to music that could just as easily be used as a dance tune. The good news is that the sound of this 1976 recording is quite good and the singing is uniformly excellent. Jose Carreras is particularly wonderful as the son, the unfortunate Jacopo Foscari. Katia Ricciarelli does a fine job singing the part of Lucrezia, Jacopo's wife. Piero Cappuccilli is in good voice and dramatically effective as the Doge. In what appears to be his first full-length commercial opera recording, the incomparable Samuel Ramey sings the small part of Loredano, the Doge's arch enemy. I have to admit that I also never cared much for Verdi's "Otello", despite its beautiful music, because that plot is so depressingly tragic. But everyone is different. If you, perhaps, are fond of Béla Bartók's Halloween opera classic, "Bluebeard's Castle", you might also enjoy this one! no cracks, breaks or chipsSmoke Free ZonePick up for Local is always available for no Fee!
