Played by top-name jazz musicians, the jazz translations make for excellent listening during the holiday season and beyond. Among the fine performances on this CD are those by the trio of bassist Stanley Clarke, drummer Ndugu Chancler, and pianist Patrice Rushen. Their rendition of "Christmas Time Is Here" is simply lovely, with Rushen playing the melody in a classical and jazz fusion-style. They follow up with "We Three Kings," which is offered as a bebop-styled waltz. These are rare jazz recitals with both songs receiving the full benefit of their accumulated experience. Smooth jazz stars David Benoit, Brian Bromberg, and Gregg Bissonette get together on an up-tempo version of "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" and "O'Tannenbaum." They bring startingly original treatments without compromising the original melodies and approach. Closing the set is a bossa nova version of "Let It Snow," a sure testament to Sammy Cahn and Jules Styne's compositional integrity and the music's ability to transcend cultures.
