Description: VA - New Wave Surf party comp of rare 60's surf instros LP NM This was the 1st surf instrumental comp from rare 60's 45's back in 1981 and one of the best too, despite the fact that there is some annoying party sounds between some of the songs Quality is pretty good. This is a repressing from about 10-15 years ago. On one song Church Key by the Revels there is a click and then a few notes in the sax solo gets repeated it's probably a defect in the mastering process and therefore should be on all copies Record is NEW UnplayedCover in NM Here is a review from Reverb Central Website It's Party Time 3 stars Alcohol Drenched Rock (Instrumental) Frat house R&B party rock. Nothing special. Moment Of Truth 3 stars Surf (Instrumental) From vinyl, this track is a solid cover of a classic of the period. It's uses the Original Surfaris' arrangement, focusing on the dark lead lines. Rhythmic and well delivered. Hangin' Five 3 stars Surf (Instrumental) Low grindy el distorto guitar over a bit of wave sound effects, a surf rhythm guitar. More Midwest style than surf. From '63. A-side to "Patch." Malibu Run 5 stars Surf (Instrumental) "Malibu Run" of the best examples of how ska was creeping into the surf instro sound just before it ended. This is a fine, very melodic, and rhythmically infectious track. Mid tempo magic. Brilliantly melodic and surfy. Check out the more ska-centered cover by the Halibuts. "Malibu Run" is a beautiful rolling song with a great melody line. It was the B-side of "Everybody Up. Church Key 4 stars Surf (Instrumental) The Revels had been playing for quite a while before laying down the classic slang-for-can-opener titled "Church Key" with producer Norman Knowles' girl friend Barbara Atkins giggling away. Danny Darnold is the lead player here, and Norman does duty on the sax. If you're impressed with their edgy energy. Surf Breaker 3 stars Surf (Instrumental) Basic riff rock with reverb and open chord twang. Dirty, spunky, but unmelodic. Much more thunder than rain. It's the "Jet Steam" band with a similarly inclined track, rhythmic and muddy, and with a rolling infectious riff. The Truant 4 stars Surf (Instrumental) One of the often mentioned obscuros. This progression based ripper features blinding pick action. It sports a major helping of high energy machine gun delivery. Pressure 4 stars Surf (Instrumental) "Pressure" was one of the Pyramids follow-up singles to "Penetration," and did not appear on their album. Totally infectious, a collector's must have, and a surf fan's delight. Patch 2 stars Surf (Instrumental) Another case of add reverb and call it surf. It's a fifties rockabilly boogie instro. From '63. B-side to "Hangin' Five." Ghost Wave 4 stars Surf (Instrumental) The Vistas of "Moon Race" c/w "No Return" fame issued this single in the early sixties. It has the same caliber of performance and sound. Rhythmic and infectious surf, great riff, and crisp playing. The piano is spectacular! Unknown 5 stars Surf (Instrumental) "Unknown" has been covered many times. The Mermen still include it in their live shows, as captured on their Haunted House CD, and Splashback do a killer rendition when they play live as well. This is one crunchy track, splashy and intense right from the initial reverb kick and glissando. Don Bradley's melody line is exceptionally good. It was the A-side of "What I'm Gonna Do" (Garnet 101). Crash 4 stars Surf (Instrumental) This spirited surf single has been covered many times. It's as obscure as they come, but very infectious and pure surf. Very percussive guitar and thundering toms make this a must have track. Mar Gaya 5 stars Surf (Instrumental) "Mar Gaya" is such a monster. Huge ominous sounding tune with a minimalist melody on the low-E that thunders across the aural horizon. Randy Holden is a genius! Must have essential surf. Simply the darkest surf single of 1965. Holden says that the inspiration for this masterpiece was Dick Dale's "The Victor," and you can hear it in the relentlessness of the hypnotic thunder, but "Mar Gaya" is infinitely larger. Static 4 stars Surf (Instrumental) This is a splendid obscuro, full of inventive surfisms and crunchy sound. It has plenty of twang and punch. The band must have been something to see. Egyptian Surf 4 stars Surf (Instrumental) Trading on stereotypical Egyptian themes, this fine single was unearthed for a cover job in the early eighties by the Surf Raiders. The arrangement is pure garage surf. Melodic, infectious and energetic. Shootin' Beavers 3 stars R&B (Instrumental) Spunky surf R&B fun jammin', like a honkin' sax party anthem with guitar domination. Perfect for a frat party. Moon Dawg 4 stars Pre Surf (Instrumental) Right in the pocket is "Moon Dawg" from this great studio band. "Moon Dawg" is intense and energetic. Even Paul Revere and the Raiders covered it on their first album. Producer Nik Venet did the dog howls. As a side note, the B-side of the original World Pacific single was called "LSD-25," one of the earliest drug-titled rock songs. Please check all of the LPs I currently have for sale.
