Description: STAN GETZ (eponymous release). Used vintage LP in Very Good+/Very Good+ condition. Fantasy Records Catalog # 3348 (stereo); original recording 1963 Condition: LP surfaces are somewhat marred visually, but sound not affected. Side One is quieter than average record, other side has a lot of “ticks.” Yeah, that’s LPs for you. LP jacket is sound, with mild ring impression (but not raised!) on front. Note these anomalies: the spine has no text at all; on front, legendary bassist (dead by age 25 in a car wreck) Scott LaFaro’s surname is misspelled as “LoFaro.” The record industry is notorious, after all, for sloppiness. They never heard of proofreaders. Behind the Music: Why was this album issued as a Fantasy release, since that label controlled several subsidiaries (e.g. Prestige Records) directly associated with Jazz? This must be because pianist Vince Guaraldi and vibraphone master Cal Tjader, both participants in this session, had releases as leaders at the time on Fantasy; their albums are listed at bottom of back of jacket. Indeed, on the back of the jacket Tjader is given co-billing with Stan. A third anomaly! This record is a reissue, as the notes on the back indicate without giving dates of original (presumably 1963, though). Rounding out the lineup to back Mr. Getz’s tenor saxophone we find Eddie Duran on guitar and the venerable Billy Higgins on drums. But wait, here’s yet another anomaly: the titles of the selections are not laid out on LP jacket, just referenced in Grover Sales Junior’s notes on the music. Here’s the program: Ginza Samba; I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face; For All We Know; Crow’s Nest; Liz Anne; Big Bear; My Buddy. About the seller: I am downsizing my personal belongings, and you can benefit. Unless otherwise indicated, all my records have been owned by me alone and treated with loving care. No scratches or gouges. I have been a Jazz radio broadcaster for 30+ years, but my musical tastes are wide-ranging. You will see this as my listed offerings grow. New items added weekly, check back often! PLEASE NOTE: I will not sell anything for less than $9.99, as it’s not worth packaging the item up and taking it to the Post Office. Sure, you can buy an LP for 50 cents or less at a yard sale, but will it have been cared for like mine? Not likely. FREE SHIPPING to U.S. address for purchase of any item of $100 or more.
