Description: This is an extremely rare original historic publication from World War II (1942) by the U. S. Navy Bureau of Ships reporting on Japanese bomb damage to the light cruiser USS Marblehead (CL12) - a unit of the US Asiatic Fleet - which occurred in the Java Sea in the Western Pacific on February 4, 1942 soon after the outbreak of WWII.1942. The story of Marblehead crew's heroic fight to save the ship from sinking, escape further Japanese attacks, and limp many thousands of miles with severe damage to finally make it home, was immortalized in the excellent book, "Where Away - The Story of the USS Marblehead". This booklet features a 12-page narrative description of the ship's bombing, the subsequent fight to save her from fires and flooding, and lessons learned from the incident. There are 21 photographs of damage, and a large fold-out diagrams of the location of fires and structural damage and flooding. This book is Number 34 of a series of over 60 published by the Navy during World War II, describing individual ship damage and losses, in order to record lessons learned from battle about damage control procedures and ship design and construction to help in new ship construction and modifications to make them better able to survive damage. The soft-covered volume measures approximately 12 inches by 8 inches, with only minor page discoloration, a one-inch tear on the right of the cover, small triangle of the cover page upper right missing, and areas of wear to the top and bottom of the binding - all as shown in photos. Dark areas of photos are shadows from picture-taking.
