Description: ..the heart has no tears to give,--it drops only blood, bleeding itself away in silence. Here we offer a very early, first-year illustrated UK edition of Harriet Beecher Stowe's iconic novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin, published by Ingram, Cooke & Company, London, in 1852, both books combined in one volume and featuring 6 full-page engravings, plus a vignette and frontispiece. When President Lincoln met Stowe in 1862, he reportedly said, “So this is the little lady who made this big war;” as Stowe's writing turned the chilling abolitionist slavery narratives of the period into a melodrama that inspired the emotions of the world. The work was rapidly translated into a number of forms, becoming the most sensational play of the 19th Century. The book sold more copies than all but the Bible. Original spine remnants applied atop new spine cloth. Front flyleaf has been replaced and a new acid-free saddle has been added to the rear gutter. Original cloth boards are edgeworn (please see pics.) Hinges are very secure. Initial and concluding signatures made of a slightly more acidic pulp, so are a shade darker. Original frontis tissue intact. Light foxing and a few fingerprints and dog-ears throughout. The binding is very tight and square, the text is very bright and crisp. 355 pages, plus a page of ads; measures approximately 8 x 5.25-inches. This iconic first will make a wonderful addition to your collection or a very thoughtful gift. Please click HERE to see the other abolition-related novels and narratives we offer. ** Have you seen all the amazing first and rare editions of iconic books we offer?
