ULTRA RARE 1870s Victorian OSTBY & BARTON A & W 10K Rose Gold Wedding Band Ring

This extremely rare band was hand-crafted by Engelhart Ostby before forming the Ostby & Barton firm with partner Nathan Barton in 1879. It was during his time with Arnold and Webster in Providence, Rhode Island in the 1870s, where he was head engraver and designer, that he created this ring. The beautiful Victorian hand-wrought band is heavily chased with a swirl design. It runs almost completely around--there is a blank space in the back, which was left for a monogram or resizing, that shows an outline of a Maltese Cross, the symbol that later signified his personal artistry at Ostby & Barton. The rose gold was tested as 10K. The appearance of three dots in a triangle formation inside the ring is his four-diamond hallmark with X in the center. Measures to be size 5 1/2 on my mandrel, but it fits SMALLER because of its width. A little bit about Ostby & Barton: In 1879 Engelhart Ostby formed a partnership with Nathan Barton. The firm became the world's largest producer of gold rings. In 1912 he decided to return from one of his many European trips on the Titanic, carrying with him his old doctor's bag he always used when traveling, filled with gems, precious stones, and other valuables that he had bought in Paris. Unfortunately, he never made it back, as he went down with the Titanic. The business continued into the 1950s. Condition: Excellent!
