Description: Maker and size: This pair of beautiful blue and white 8 5/8 inch plates was produced by the iconic manufacturer John Ridgway & Co. of Staffordshire, England, sometime in the mid-1800s. Ridgways produced earthenware and ironstone goods in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, from the 1790s to the late 20th century. The company was well known for its printed, or transferware, goods. The blue mark on these plates has the word "University" and an attribution to "J Ridgway". Design: At the blue and white plates' center is an idyllic scene of a university and its grounds. Cartouches of a similar scene surround the center within a latticework band. One plate is slightly darker. Condition: The plates are in good condition for their age and history of active use. There are no chips, nicks, significant scratches or repairs. Both centers have small stains and wear to the edges. There is noticeable crazing throughout. One has a faint hairline crack that extends from the edge to the rim. This is shown in the photos with the penny. Nonetheless, the plates remain very beautiful and would complement any collection of blue and white or Staffordshire china. Please check all the photos very carefully - they are an important part of the description.
