The Aurora Borealis, the mesmerizing phenomenon where colored bands of light dance across the northern skies, is often described as an otherworldly or religious experience. In Scandinavian mythology, these multi-hued celestial tendrils were the pathway between the mortal realm and the spirit world. Native Americans call this phenomenon the "Dance of the Spirits". In medieval Europe, Aurora lights were interpreted as a sign from God. However you interpret them, 2023 Aurora Borealis 1 Troy Ounce Silver Proof Coin is a luminary masterpiece that beautifully captures nature’s greatest light show, the Northern Lights. The dynamic scene reveals streaks of light and dark blue converging above a peaceful Northern wilderness, all rendered in stunning relief. The pure silver surfaces reflects the celestial glow, vibrantly capturing the mystical energy of this dramatic phenomenon. Last year's Aurora Australia Southern Lights Pure Silver and Gold Proofs sold out quickly at the mint (but we may have a few available here). Don't delay and don't miss out—get your radiant Northern Lights precious metals proofs while you can! Auroras, Miracles of Nature The incredible and other-worldly phenomenon of the Northern Lights can be seen at night in the higher latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, from Canada and the United States through Greenland, Iceland, mainland Europe, and Siberia. The Aurora Borealis, as the Northern Lights are also known, can been seen throughout Alaska and sometimes down into the northern tier of the lower 48 states.. When the solar wind whips through the earth’s magnetic field at these high latitudes, electricity is the result—up to one trillion watts! Those who have seen these fascinating ribbons of color have witnessed an experience they’ll never forget! Auroras can be found in both the far north and the far south. In northern latitudes, the aurora effect is known as the Aurora Borealis (or the Northern Lights), named after the Roman goddess of dawn, Aurora, and the Greek name for the north wind, Boreas. Auroras seen near the magnetic pole may be high overhead, but from farther away, they illuminate the northern horizon as a bluish glow or sometimes a faint red, as if the Sun were rising from an unusual direction. Discrete auroras often display magnetic field lines or curtain-like structures, and can change within seconds or glow unchanging for hours, most often in fluorescent green. The northern lights have had a number of names throughout history. The Native American Cree Indians call this phenomenon the "Dance of the Spirits". In medieval Europe, auroras were commonly seen as a sign from God. Its southern counterpart, the Aurora Australis (or the Southern Lights), has almost identical features to the Aurora Borealis and changes simultaneously with changes in the northern auroral zone and is visible from high southern latitudes in Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica and South America. Auroras occur on other planets. Similar to the Earth's aurora, they are visible close to the planet's magnetic poles. An aurora is a natural light display in the sky that occurs in the high latitudes of the Arctic and Antarctic, caused by the collision of energetic charged particles with atoms in the high atmosphere. The charged particles originate in the magnetosphere and solar wind. Most auroras occur in a band known as the auroral zone, which is typically 3° to 6° in latitudinal extent and at all local times or longitudes. The auroral zone is typically 10° to 20° from the magnetic pole defined by the axis of the Earth's magnetic dipole. During a geomagnetic storm, the auroral zone expands to lower latitudes. The discrete auroras are sharply defined features within the diffuse auroras that vary in brightness from just barely visible to the naked eye, to bright enough to read a book by at night! Discrete auroras are usually seen only in the night sky, because they are not as bright as the sunlit sky. Obverse The radiant Northern Lights soar high above the frosted cameo proof northern landscape, and are reflected in the waters below. The legend AURORA BOREALIS, discretely written in the wooden bridge, indicates the theme. Reverse Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, in crowned profile facing right. This portrait, featuring Her Majesty wearing a tiara and pearl earrings, was executed by the sculptor Ian Rank Broadley. This is the special tribute effigy, which includes the dates of her reign, 1952-2022. The legend QUEEN ELIZABETH II, the date and the denomination also appear. The legend 1 OZ 9999 AG guarantees the weight and purity. Packaging The coin is encapsulated inside a luxurious clamshell-style presentation case, lined with black velvet and satin, and protected by a full color outer cardboard box.
