Description: With the ambiguous motto "National Dominance" on the reverse, this coin was first issued in 1959, as a democratically-elected government struggled to survive, using the imposing image of Kemal Ataturk, the first president of modern Turkey (1939), in its cause. The effort failed, the military seized power in May 1960, arrested hundreds of government officials, held extensive trials on an island off-shore Istanbul, and ultimately convicted and hanged the prime minister and two other ministers. Perhaps to turn the evocation of Ataturk to its own advantage, the military government increased production of the coin from seven million in 1959 to eleven million in 1960. This coin appears to be uncirculated.
