Description: Notice: Absolutely NO overseas sales on this item. Incredibly rare World War II "Top Secret" invasion map for the Battle of Peleliu, from the USS Hazelwood. While there is no information within the map that states that this is Peleliu, in blue ballpoint ink reads the name "Palaus", which refers to the small island chain that contains Peleliu. The geographic and tactical details of the beachhead also appears to be that island. The USS Hazelwood provided direct fire support for the 1st Marine Division, hammering Japanese defensive positions. This would have belonged to a higher ranking officer in charge of the craft going ashore. The text within the map gives detailed instruction in the deployment of landing craft and mortar gunboats. A historically significant artifact for the discrimating collector. Palau Hazelwood next participated in the invasion of the Palaus. As the 1st Marine Division landed on Peleliu, Palau Islands, 15 September, she pounded enemy shore positions with gunfire to lessen Japanese opposition. She remained off Peleliu on patrol until 3 October, when she sailed to Seeadler Harbor, Manus Island. There the never-resting veteran joined Vice Admiral Kinkaid's naval forces for the invasion and liberation of the Philippines. As troops landed under naval cover on Leyte 20 October, Hazelwood came under heavy Japanese air attacks. The next week brought constant enemy air raids and a succession of far reaching fleet moves as the Imperial Navy made one final but futile effort to drive America out of the Philippines and regain some measure of control over the seas. In this struggle, known to history as theBattle of Leyte Gulf, the Japanese Navy was all but annihilated. Three enemy battleships, four carriers, six heavy cruisers, four light cruisers, nine destroyers, and a host of planes were destroyed. Hazelwoodherself accounted for at least twokamikazesdestroyed. Measures approximately 16 3/4" x 21 3/4" This item has never been framed, and is still folded as the day I found it 20 years ago. It will be shipped folded.
