An actual, complete newspaper published at the date listed, not a modern re-issue. During this period, this journal was a major, influential national publication which employed many of the top artists of the era. Paper uniformly age toned as typical, some pages loose. Issue was once bound up in a volume and is now free-standing and complete unto itself as originally issued. Nice looking, clean, well preserved example, pages loosened, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive. Text on reverse of each page as always, images and maps from Harper's like this are often offered separately for display. Newspaper measures c. 16" H x 11" W. Periodical will be shipped gently rolled in a sturdy 3" wide tube to ensure it arrives safely to you! Multiple issues purchased at the same time will be shipped flat. [B11347]. The entire front page is a great (and rather famous) illustration of: "Mr. and Mrs. Charles S. Stratton (General Tom Thumb And Wife)." taken from a Brady photograph. Page 2 has an article on them. Other prints within include a full page: "The Effects of the Proclamation--Freed Negroes Coming Into Our Lines At New Bern, North Carolina" showing many slaves on the road as a result of Lincoln's recent Emancipation Proclamation. Also a full page with 2 prints: "Departure of the Great Southern Expedition from Beaufort, North Carolina" & "the Rebel Rams Engaging Our Blockading Fleet off Charleston, South Carolina" a full page with 5 prints of: "Fort Hindman, At Arkansas Post, Arkansas"; a small comic print of: "Mr. J. Ross Browne, Our Artist 'Correspondent At Large' "; a half page: "The Ironclad 'Montauk' Engaging the Rebel fort M'Allister in the Ogeechee River...". The double page centerfold is a very nice & displayable print: "Hearts And Hands - St. Valentine's Day, 1863" which has 9 vignettes. The back page has a cartoon: "United States Military Shaving Shop".
