The best source on the trial of John Fries (1750-1818) and his cohorts for treason during the “Fries Rebellion” of 1798 and 1799. The rebellion arose in response to the first direct tax on land, housing, and slaves imposed by the federal government following the XYZ Affair and in preparation for a potential war with France. The rebellion was further sparked by a misunderstanding of a Federal property tax, saw farmers in Pennsylvania resist assessments, believing they were being taxed per window. Led by auctioneer John Fries, the insurgents halted tax collection and freed imprisoned resisters, prompting Federal intervention. Fries was captured, tried twice, and sentenced to hang for treason along with William Getman and Frederick Heaney, his two neighbors. The three men were pardoned by President John Adams just hours before their execution was to be scheduled. Preceded by Shays’ and the Whiskey Rebellions, the “Fries Rebellion” was the last of three American tax revolts of the late eighteenth-century. A significant account of one of the major historical events of the Federal Era and Adams administration, and rare in the market. Sabin 25961. Evans 37104.
