Description: This is the 1813 6th edition of Samuel Johnson and George Steevens' "The Plays of William Shakspeare," a 21 volume, 5.75"x9" hardcover set known as the Second Variorum edition, as well as the Reed edition, because Isaac Reed revised and augmented Johnson and Steevens notes. There are 20 volumes here: Vol. 3, containing Malone's Historical Account of the English Stage, and the Further Historical Account by Chalmers, is missing. Printed in London for J. Nichols and Son, and others. The set is in good condition. The half-leather, contemporary bindings show rubbing, edge wear, spots of loss to the leather and gilt title lettering. Pages near the front and back have foxing. Vol. 1 has a number of small marks to the front pastedown and ffep. Most volumes have pencil notes on a flyleaf, or flyleafs, at the back, a small mark to the ffep. The first two volumes also have marginal pencil notes to some pages - several other volumes have a couple small marginal marks, or bent corners. The hinges are intact, the bindings firm. A heavy set, that may require multiple boxes to ship.
