Description: The Pie and the Patty-Pan, by Beatrix Potter. London: Frederick Warne and Co. and New York, 1905. Early edition, in maroon paper boards, featuring the cat in a small circle on the front cover; end-papers with a design featuring a pie and a patty-pan. Sized 5.3 x 7.1 in, 52 pages. The first of Beatrix Potter's works to be published in a larger format. It is not a first edition due to the lack of the year 1905 on the front of the title page, and the presence of decorated endpapers. First editions were “published with plain mottled lavender end-papers, and it was not until it was bound in a slightly different cover some years later that end-paper designs were used, featuring a pie and a patty-pan”. While not a first edition, this is, however, a pre-1930 publication, as “in 1930 the title was changed to The Tale of the Pie and the Patty-Pan, and the book printed in the small format” (Linder, p.425). Poor condition. Spine is missing and has been taped with brown paper tape which overlaps front and rear boards by half an inch, corners are very worn and extremities are grubby. Front endpapers have been taped with brown paper tape, as well as pages 12-13, 14-15 and 28-29, however these with white tape. Pages are somewhat chipped to extremities with foxing and thumb marks. There is an inscription in pen to the half-title page, on the other side of Potter’s dedication page, dated Christmas 1908. Some of the black-and-white line illustrations have been (perhaps not very neatly) coloured in, but the colour plates do not seem to have suffered the same fate. Some signatures are loose, including a serious split to rear joint, with netting and spine completely exposed. A copy in poor condition overall, but complete with all plates present.
