The band was led and managed by Melville Morris. The earliest reference of the Piccadilly Players, was that they were booked by Morris on May 10th 1926 to play at The Beau Rivage at Sheepshead Bay, N.Y. On December 13th the band recorded its first sessions for Edison and continued to record for the company until its closure in October 1929. Lead trumpet on several of the Edison sides was studio musician, Irving Peskin. He is largely unknown since most musicians were not given individual credit on the record label. In an interview, at age 95, he described the recording process at the Edison studio. His trumpet work is quite good with interesting improvisations throughout the sessions. Unfortunately, at the end of 1929, the Great Depression brought an end to the Edison record business. The Piccadilly Players were the last band to record for Edison in October 1929. The CD presents a selection of their Edison Diamond Disc recordings from 1927 to 1929. They feature some great jazz musicians of the period. There are several hot jazz solos throughout the sessions. All selections have been digitally restored by Vintage Recordings.
