(ca. 8th Century BC) TITLE: The Odyssey and The Iliad. NOTE: These are prose translations by Samuel Butler (1900). In his translation, many of the original Greek names have been changed to their Roman (Latin) counterparts. The Odyssey is one of the two major ancient Greek epic poems (the other being the Iliad), attributed to the poet Homer. The poem is commonly dated to between 800 and 600 BC. The poem is, in part, a sequel to the Iliad, and concerns the events that befall the Greek hero Odysseus in his long journey back to his native land Ithaca after the fall of Troy. It takes Odysseus ten years to return to his native land of Ithaca after ten years of war; during his 20-year absence, his son Telemachus and his wife Penelope must deal with a group of unruly suitors who have moved into Odysseus home to compete for Penelope's hand in marriage, since most have assumed that Odysseus has died. The poem is a fundamental text in the Western canon and continues to be read in both Homeric Greek and translations around the world. The Iliad, together with the Odyssey, is one of two ancient Greek epic poems traditionally attributed to Homer. The poem is commonly dated to the 8th or 7th century BC, and many scholars believe it is the oldest extant work of literature in the Greek language, making it the first work of European literature. The existence of a single author for the poems is disputed as the poems themselves show evidence of a long oral tradition and hence, multiple authors. The poem concerns events during the tenth and final year in the siege of the city of Iliun, or Troy, by the Greeks READ BY: The Odyssey: Book 01 -Caeristhiona Book 02 -Caeristhiona Book 03 -Caeristhiona Book 04 -Caeristhiona, Tricia Book 05 -JemmaBlythe Book 06 -Gesine Book 07 -huge Book 08 -on the road Book 09- Reynard Book 10- Reynard Book 11- Rainbow Book 12- Rainbow Book 13 -JemmaBlythe Book 14 -earth calling Book 15 -kurtrik Book 16 -Rainbow Book 17 -pipedreams Book 18 -pipedreams Book 19 -huge mac Book 20 -kayray Book 21 -Chris Hawke Book 22 -Chris Hawke Book 23 -DSayers Book 24 -DSayers The Illiad: Book I: The quarrel between Achilles and Agamemnon -Ua Book II: Agamemnon's dream -Ticktockman Book III: Paris challenges Menelaus -hefyd Book IV: A quarrel in Olympus - huge mac Book V: The exploits of Diomed -Ua Book VI: Hector and Andromache -Caeristhiona Book VII: Hector and Ajax fight -huge mac Book VIII: The victory of the Trojans -Kaffen Book IX: The embassy to Achilles t-hemichaek Book X: Ulysses and Diomed go out as spies -lezer Book XI: Agamemnon's day of glory -pete_darby Book XII: The Trojans break the wall -Ticktockman Book XIII: Neptune helps the Achaeans -Ticktockman Book XIV: Agamemnon proposes retreat -fdougher Book XV: Apollo heals Hector -klavergne Book XVI: Patroclus fights in the armor of Achilles -theoldtree Book XVII: The light around the body of Patroclus -Ticktockman Book XVIII: The shield of Achilles -lezer Book XIX: Achilles goes out to fight -Gesine Book XX: Achilles fights Aeneas -entr0p3te Book XXI: Achilles drives the Trojans back -LeonMire Book XXII: The death of Hector -Ticktockman Book XXIII: The funeral games of Patroclus -Mns Book XXIV: Priam ransoms Hector's body -ontheroad TIME: 25 hours 47 mins.
